ABSTRACT
Since gaining independence, the Indian government has made several efforts to engage corporations and large businesses to elevate the masses, especially the impoverished and marginalized communities. Even with the introduction of the first five-year plan, there was considerable discussion regarding Corporate Social Responsibility. However, during that time, the concept of CSR was confined to the company's own stakeholders. Currently, the notion of CSR has expanded in both its definition and implementation (Secchi, 2007, and Lee, 2008). The initial understanding of CSR focused solely on philanthropy, whereas later the focus shifted to the relationship between business and society, particularly regarding the role that a corporation or firm plays in addressing social issues.In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, market performance and social performance were interconnected.
